Planning Out a Dumpster for a Home Construction Project
The chance to change the one thing you don’t like about your home—or start to build the house of your dreams one room at a time—is a great undertaking. But it’s also a lot of work, not only in construction materials, tools, and contractors but also in what to do with all the waste materials. If you need a dumpster for a home construction project, planning placement, the number needed, and size are critical parts of the project. Find out how below.
What’s the Scope of Your Construction Project?
Different home construction projects are going to have different needs when it comes to renting a dumpster. If you’re going to need the dumpster for a cleanup so you can remodel a space, you’ll need less than if you’re also tearing out carpet and drywall. In general, from the least to most rubbish-producing projects you’ll need a dumpster for are: home cleanout, home renovations, home demolition, and home remodeling. Some may require multiple dumpsters (such as doing a cleanout, then demolition, then remodeling), especially over a longer span of time.
Estimating the Dumpster Size Needed
At LeBoeuf, we offer roll-off dumpsters in various sizes for all types of projects. While our 10 and 15 cubic yard dumpsters are our most popular, there are three factors to consider when getting the right dumpster for your needs:
- Types of Rubbish: What kind of debris are you disposing of? Bulky materials from construction projects will need more room than household products from a clear-out.
- Total Volume: How much rubbish is your project going to generate? Dumpster measurements are in cubic yards. For reference, one cubic yard can hold about five to six 13-gallon trash bags.
- Space for Dumpster: Have a tight location for the dumpster? You may want to rent a smaller dumpster and then swap it out. You may also want to keep additional space for using the access door.
We offer dumpster rentals at 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40 cubic yard open-top roll-off containers. To learn more about sizing your dumpster, check out our blog, Picking the Right-Sized Dumpster for Your Project.
Other Considerations for Your Dumpster
There are other factors to consider when you’re getting a dumpster, including its placement and how you’re going to work around it, how long you’ll need it, and how to cut down on weight.
- Placing Your Dumpster: Make sure you’ve got a level space accessible by road for the dumpster. It will also need clearance for truck access so you can properly load and work around it.
- Under Weight and Time: There are fines associated with an overfilled dumpster in terms of weight (1 ton per 10 yards storage; for example, 15 cubic yards has a max weight of 1.5 tons) and time; every day you’ll need it for past 10 days.
- Dealing with Bulky Items: You can walk bulky items into the dumpster via the service door, so make sure to do that first before filling. You can also use our bulk curbside pickup service for items like appliances and furniture if you’re a current service customer.
It’s also important to remember that not everything in your project may be able to go in the dumpster, including many textiles like mattresses. Learn more about what’s banned from landfills in our blog, Understanding Waste Disposal Bans for Massachusetts and Connecticut.
